Transforming Tourism in the Mexican Caribbean: Toward a Regenerative Model in Quintana Roo.

Transforming Tourism in the Mexican Caribbean: Toward a Regenerative Model in Quintana Roo.

Context & Challenges

At Mayma, we believe every territory holds the potential to regenerate its relationship with nature and its social fabric.
In Quintana Roo—one of the world’s top tourist destinations—the growth of mass tourism has led to a number of environmental and social challenges:

  • Degradation of beaches, coral reefs, and forests
  • Extreme economic dependence on tourism (87% of the state’s GDP)
  • Social vulnerability, with 27% of the population living in poverty
  • Massive sargassum landings along the coast, with estimated losses of 11.6% of GDP

Additionally, more than 80% of tourism-related supplies are sourced from outside the state, limiting local development opportunities.

Frente a este escenario, vemos una oportunidad: reimaginar el modelo turístico hacia uno que regenere, incluya y prospere de forma sostenible.

Our Initiative

With support from the Visa Foundation, Mayma is leading a systemic transformation strategy aimed at integrating local MSMEs into a new regenerative tourism value chain for Quintana Roo.

Our approach focuses on:

  • Coordinating major tourism buyers (hotels, resorts, intermediaries) to drive sustainable local procurement
  • Strengthening and accelerating MSMEs through training, mentorship, and access to new market and financing opportunities

Through this initiative, we seek to position tourism in the Mexican Caribbean as a regenerative force for both people and the environment.
